About this place

Caleta La Cruz, located along the central coastline of the department of Tumbes, holds monumental status in South American historiography as the definitive landing site of Francisco Pizarro's third and final voyage in May 1532, initiating the land march that culminated in the fall of the Inca Empire.

Following the military neutralization of the mangrove resistance and the pacification of the valley of Cabeza de Vaca, Pizarro sought a propitious coastal anchorage to reorganize his expeditionary vanguard, unload horses and heavy iron ordnance from the caravels, and establish a permanent territorial claim for the Spanish Crown.

On a prominent coastal bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Pizarro presided over a solemn founding ceremony in May 1532, commanding the raising of a massive timber cross crafted from regional hardwood. This monument, christened as the 'Cruz de la Conquista' (Cross of the Conquest), symbolized the twin pillars of European expansion: Catholic evangelization and the royal sovereignty of Emperor Charles V over the territories of Nueva Castilla.

The site, known ever since as Caleta La Cruz, served as the logistical staging platform from which Spanish infantry and cavalry departed southwards on May 16, 1532, crossing the arid coastal desert toward the Chira River basin, where Pizarro would establish San Miguel de Tangarará (the first Spanish settlement in Peru). Today, the historical precinct is marked by an emblematic commemorative cross and monument overlooking the bay, serving as an open-air historical sanctuary commemorating the foundational intercultural encounter that defined the destiny of the Andean world.
