About this place

On the morning of July 23, 1941, during the opening phase of the Battle of Zarumilla, Lieutenant José Abelardo Quiñones Gonzáles performed one of the most celebrated acts of military heroism in aviation history, becoming a National Hero of Peru and Patron of the Peruvian Air Force.

Born in Pimentel in 1914, Quiñones graduated first in his flight class at the Central Aviation School of Las Palmas, standing out for his daring aerobatic mastery, famously flying inverted merely a meter above the airfield. In 1941, he was deployed as a fighter pilot in the 41st Fighter Squadron of the XXI Pursuit Squadron of the Peruvian Aeronautical Corps (CAP), operating from the Tumbes Airfield aboard North American NA-50 fighter aircraft (popularly known as 'Toritos').

On July 23, at approximately 08:00 hours, Lieutenant Quiñones took off as wingman in a four-ship flight tasked with close air support and tactical dive-bombing against fortified enemy artillery and anti-aircraft nests in Quebrada Seca and Rancho Chico. Executing his low-altitude strafing and bombing run, his aircraft (numbered XXI-41-3) was squarely hit by heavy anti-aircraft ground fire, causing flames to immediately engulf the engine cowling and wings.

At 1,000 meters of altitude, Quiñones possessed sufficient time and altitude to abandon the burning aircraft by parachute over friendly lines. Instead of saving his life, he made the supreme conscious decision: maintaining total control of the damaged fighter, he rolled the aircraft into an aggressive terminal dive, aiming directly at the enemy anti-aircraft battery position. His impact annihilated the gun emplacement and personnel, clearing the corridor for the advancing Peruvian ground infantry. By Law No. 16126 of May 10, 1966, the Peruvian Congress declared him a National Hero and Gran General del Aire del Perú.
